Reenie and Clare are both light skinned enough to ‘get through’ and although Reenie has episodes where she allows incorrect assumptions about her race, Clare has made her whole life pretending to be white. Clare (Negga) is also married to a man who has no idea that she, like Reenie, is black. Irene (Thompson), nicknamed “Reenie”, is married to Brian (André Holland), has two young children and is firmly established in the upper middle class. Kong, here gets to work with a pair of performers with equally confident yet solid talent: Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, playing childhood friends who unexpectedly reunite as adults in the 1920s in New York.
Hall, who can bring a sense of gravity even to the gleefully ridiculous tastes of Godzilla vs. Most of the actors who make their first feature films tend to focus on, well, other actors – and that’s certainly the case that Who passed, the debut feature from marvelous actress Rebecca Hall, listens to the performers at its center.
